If you find yourself in a populated area needing a diversion, heavy gauge speaker wire attached to both rails of an active rail line near an intersection with crossing lights and gates will activate the lights and gate, but with no train coming. Your diversion time will be short-lived though, because then they'll be looking for people even harder once they figure out what happened, so don't sit on top a nearby warehouse drinking high gravity lagers. Unless that's your thing.
