SONG OF THE DAY: Gimme a Pigfoot (and a Bottle of Beer)

This “Gimme a Pigfoot” song was made famous at first by Bessie Smith, but this LaVern Baker version ain’t really fucking around none. The song was originally written by Kid Wilson and Coot Grant, a husband and wife songwriting team who performed on the southern black vaudeville circuit, and DID NOT GIVE A FUCK. Kid Wilson was really named Wesley Wilson, but went by Kid, although also had the nickname Sox so that he was more often than not billed as Kid “Sox” Wilson. He had previously been in a duo with another dude, billed as Pigmeat Pete and Catjuice Charlie. (Wilson was Catjuice.) There is never any lack of need for more songs about FUCK Y’ALLS BULLSHIT LET’S JUST LOUNGE, OKAY, because with microbreweries and the gentrification of the entire Earth, and establishments making themselves only available to the segment of society with the most discretionary income, places of great indiscretion are fewer and farther between. And while I don’t eat pork, so ain’t trying to gnaw on no pigfoot, plus am almost nine years sober, I WOULD GLADLY TRADE ALL THESE FUCKIN’ LAME ASS PLACES PEOPLE GO TO FOR A SPOT THAT HAD CHEAP ASS BEER AND PIGFEET, READY TO ROLL. We’ve progressed beyond being able to fuckin’ chill.
There’s a great lesson from the survival mode of rural juke joints and the Chitlin’ Circuit, that despite the prevailing rules of the larger finer society, you can create these autonomous zones to get wild and happy within. I’m not sure people realize that any more. Everybody seems so keen on getting a seat at the table, that nobody thinks, “man, fuck y’all’s table” and does their own damn thing out where the assholes ain’t bothering to look. AND NO MATTER HOW MUCH THE ASSHOLES GET INTO YOUR HEAD, TRYING TO CONVINCE YOU HOW POWERFUL THEY ARE, THEY CAN’T LOOK EVERYWHERE.

J.J. Krupert Top 13 Countdown – December ’10 #2: “The Baby Is Mine” by Swamp Dogg

I don’t know, I’ve written an awful lot about Swamp Dogg on this site in the past year, and I feel it’s unfair to August Moon of Richmond public access fame. Swamp Dogg is great and all, but I’ve not hyped up “Homeboy” by August Moon at all, or the Richmond fatback sound. Swamp Dogg bolted Virginia and made his soul name for himself in various other parts of the country. August Moon made the anthem for the Fatback sound, which was Richmond’s style of soul, as every city that had a soul music sound back in the day had to have a name for whatever it was they did. Can I make mention of how tribal black culture sometimes seems to this day, and wonder if there’s any connection to the African roots, and not come across as racist? Racism has ruined everything. My last name is Scottish, and the Scotches rolled in clans, not tribes, but it was pretty much the same thing, sort of. But a white dude can’t be like, “Yeah, I roll with this clan,” because of the whole Ku Klux Klan stigma. Speaking of which, I was looking at pictures of Klan outfits the other day, and honestly, those shiny green grand wizard outfits, those things were pimp as fuck. I mean, I’m not down with killing black people. I don’t even like raising my voice at black people to be honest with you. But you can’t deny the awesome style of the Klan higher-ups.
We didn’t keep the fatback from our previous two pigs. We cooked it down in a giant crock pot to make homemade lard, most of which my wife sold at like $10 a pint for people to make herbal tinctures with. It’s really hard to get nice healthy lard. Next pair of pigs, I’d like to keep some for cooking, because it can’t be as deathly for me as soybean oils, but most likely we’ll just sell it all again, because times is tight motherfucker. I am selling the fat of my former farm animals though, which is really funny to me, because it’s 2010 and both me and my wife have college degrees. Rise and grind, baby; rise and grind.

J.J. Krupert Top 13 Countdown - April '10 #8: "Gulag Orkestar" by Beirut

I don't believe in the fake magic of Pandora, so I go about new shit the old-fashioned way... I accidentally find out about it by hanging around some other dude. I was at my man D's t-shirt shop one evening, for whatever reason, and he was playing on some Gogol Bordello, and we got to talking about real gypsy music, or wacky world music done with indy rock flair, and he hipped me to Firewater, which led me to fuck around and look up other crap, and somehow I ended up discovering this Beirut shit, which is basically one kid from New Mexico who made himself a group after travelling to Europe and what not. On one hand, I want to playa hate on some kid who gets to wander the world and indulge his musical fetishes, let it steep around inside his brain, and then reconstitute it as some musics for the hipster world. But on the other hand, I enjoyed the shit on this album, and I hardly ever enjoy white people music made after 1991.
I do not know the idealogy behind what a gulag orkestar is or isn't is, but I assume in a more perfect world it involves dudes who have pointy and thick facial hairs who like to buy sausages from corner stores that have whole pig heads in the front window. I guess the "gulag" part conjures up dead jewish people, so it's probably some sort of statement against something terrible that went completely over my head, because I don't actually pay attention to lyrical content in anything shorter than a 24-line rap verse, so it just seems like good-feeling out there old world influenced modern musics to me. I've also had a fascination with east Europe lately, I think missing my dead ass grandpa, who was the son of Polish immigrants and would talk about the demon spirits the old ass seafaring Polacks used to talk of, or maybe I'm just a stupid fucking dumbass. Hard to say; probably a healthy splash of both. But it's a song I apparently enjoyed, and it was played with regularity on my gaypod and now was on this list and I had to write about it. And I think I've done just enough.

Peroni Nastro Azzurro

AFFORDABILITY: Dude, in the grand scheme of things, none of this beer is truly affordable on my part, and I should be ashamed of myself. 0 out of 5.
DESTROYABILITY: Straight up, and this may be because my wife and daughters drink that fancy carbonated water bullshit, but this here allegedly Italian beer was okay for me, and it had the taste of slight carbonation, like someone had poured a ginger ale in Yuengling Light. I do not mind that, though I would not go out of my way for that. Italia is not exactly known for their beer, though I'm not exactly known for giving a fuck either. 2 out of 5.
LABEL AESTHETIC: It’s got all Italian words and looks like something that would wrap around deli meat. I have no problem with that, especially if it’s either hard or genoa salami. We traveled home through Pennsylvania last year and stopped at a big ass store up there, and as a Southern ass whiteboy, I was impressed by the deli counter of a place where white people still have ethnicity. I’m not no proud ass white guy who would go to jail and tattoo “100% WHITEBOY” on his forearm or anything, but it’s nice to see white people who still know what their flavor is, rather than the Southern-American mutt like myself. Those types, knowing their family history, tend to make better deli meats and sausages and all as well, which is really what motivated my concern most anyways. I don’t give a fuck about history or heritage; I just want some good ass food to eat. Yet you have to be careful, because it just doesn’t mix easily as you want. I have encountered a couple Thai-Mexican restaurants in my spirals, and they always seem to suck. Thai food is great, and Mexicans are the greatest mixed breed underclass the western hemisphere has ever known, yet the two food cultures mixed together don’t go well. It’s like soul food and health food. If you see a “soul food” restaurant that brags about tofu BBQ, that’s bad news. But if it brags about fried chicken, that’s good, especially if they misspell it as “fryed”. 3 out of 5.
CORPORATE MASTER: Oh man, the sideways top of the bottle label says this part I’d expect: “Peroni beer imported by Birra Peroni Internazionale”, which makes perfect sense, except then it claims “Eden, NC” as its home. North Carolina? Eden, North Carolina? I think I saw wrestling there one time, or drag racing, or something. That’s my homeland, Piedmont North Carolina/Virginia, the part where the factories have plywood windows or they manufacture socks, and the stores have a dirty feel but it’s comforting. The fact that part of the Earthball imports an Italian beer makes me proud of it, though the beer ain’t all that perfect for my current life. Still though, 4 out of 5.
OVERALL AMBIANCE: It is what it is. I can’t feel proud of it, nor can I talk shit upon its name. Mostly I try to think of the Dominic Whatever dude who played Junior Soprano when I drink it because one Sunday night, on the third digital PBS channel that plays international type things, they had an Italian movie that I carbon dated from visual keys to be about 1982 with that Dominic Junior Soprano dude in it, speaking Italian only, and he looked exactly the same as he did in the HBO series, just maybe slightly less wrinkled. 3 out of 5.
TOTAL RATING: 2 & 2/5 STARS!
