SONG OF THE DAY: Steppin' Out (Campfire Tapes)

Usually, I always post a video with the song of the day. Years ago, I posted download links to share the mp3s, but everybody stopped keeping actual files and just streamed, so I switched to YouTube links. But I can’t do that today, because it’s a Michelle Shocked song, and she keeps all her stuff from being available anywhere for streaming. And I get where she’s coming from, so I didn’t feel like forcing the issue by uploading my own video and have it get a copyright strike, either immediately or eventually. So I let it be.
I get the distrust of all the improvements to our culture that are supposed to make life easier, because that ease don’t always fulfill its promise. I got mad earlier today because a ghost knocked the fan out the kitchen window, and it flipped some stuff off the counter, including a watermelon, which split and rolled across the floor. Being its guts got exposed, I had to go ahead and chop it up, even though I probably would’ve waited another day or two, because I still had some muskmelon to finish off in the fridge. But I chopped it up. It’s a seedless watermelon, because that’s all they had at the store. Juices had leaked out everywhere when it split on the fall, but it was still pretty wet inside as I chopped it up, as one would expect from a watermelon. But when I ate a couple pieces (standard tax while chopping), it wasn’t sweet. I mean, it was, but not like I would have hoped. Them old seeded watermelons was way sweeter, juicier too. Sure, you had to spit out seeds, but honestly, how difficult was that? Plus, being they had seeds, it means biologically, it won’t sterile. Conceivably, you could throw the seeds at the edge of the woods, and next year, like magic, you might have a watermelon vine growing out the woods. That actually happened at my old house one year, and that watermelon vine grew all over the edges of a hog pen. I only got one small melon out of all those vines, but it was pretty magic just to watch it grow through the summer, sprawling itself out everywhere.
But all I got now is these sad ass seedless watermelons, which all the marks love because we’ve cultivated a society of toddlers who want seedless watermelon fruit and an endless supply of chicken tendies. And I’m guessing this also means that every year, actual watermelon farmers, all the little Mr. Majestyks out there, have to order a new batch of freshly fertilized melon seeds, to grow a new crop. Of course, there are few Mr. Majestyks farming… it’s all giant farmaceutical corporations, and even the smaller farms are the petty bourgeoisie doing the Sylvanaqua thing and cosplaying as farmer off the saved up money from their early retirement working for defense or intelligence contractors. We’ve created such a completely clusterfucked society, with nothing but consumer cultural identities, so that it all falls apart so easily. That’s why all them assholes were so mad about the fake threat of “cancel culture” because when your cultural identity is consumer-oriented, if somebody points out the products you’ve built your existence off of are flawed and potentially corrupt, then you’ve fucked up the plastic foundation of their own self-identity.
Oh well, fuck it. If freedom is outlawed, then only outlaws will be free. I’ll still eat this non-sweet ass seedless watermelon, out of respect for the hungry, for a day or so, then give the rest to my girlfriend’s chickens. Or I’ll throw it at the edge of the woods for the critters back there. We’ve been having a mama and fawn deer hanging the past couple days. I bet, despite the seedless non-sweet ass nature of it, they’d be stoked about a little watermelon. Or maybe not. Maybe they’d nibble some, and the mom would say in deer to the fawn, “Damn, this triflin’ ass man eats nasty.” Maybe that’s why they galloped over the neighbor’s yard when I saw them earlier today. Fuck. How embarrassing.

SONG OF THE DAY: Southern Girl

Frankie Beverly died last week, and I don’t think there’s anything was more pure Black cookout music than him and Maze. It didn’t offend nobody, set a lovely mood, and there was an extensive catalog that went on for hours. I was texting a friend about it and called it yacht rock for Black folks. The next day she sent me a post that Questlove did saying the exact same thing. Maze was smooth as hell. Anyways, this is probably my favorite Maze track, at least today. It changes regularly, depending on the vibes, but I tend to come back to “Southern Girl” pretty often.

SONG OF THE DAY: Saturday Night Fish Fry

I got a fish fryer out in the shed, that had lived in the camper behind the old house when I was still married. I ain’t used that thing nearly enough. Might have to bust it out for my birthday next month. Winter birthdays are tough because it ain’t cookout weather, and you can’t properly celebrate a birthday unless you’re in the yard with a speaker dragged through a window somewhere blasting music. I do got a burn barrel though, which is the winter equivalent to a yard speaker I guess. Anyways, I need to fry some fish.

SONG OF THE DAY: Wrong Crowd

Easy to forget how many obscure soul and R&B and even rock and country groups there were back in the day. But think about how many soundcloud rappers there are in every corner of the American Earth, getting cursive letter face tattoos just above their eyebrow, thinking that’s the magical missing piece to becoming the Next Big Thing. Capitalism still eats up people’s dreams, as we get trained to think our dreams need to turn into money, and somebody exploits that weakness in vision to their own benefit. This track is from an old Virginia soul compilation that I couldn’t even find to illegally download online, so somebody sent me a burned copy. Prince George is the county southeast of Petersburg, south of the James, headed down to Nat Turner country – a wonderful expanse of rural Virginia that I’ve often wandered through, and in fact prefer to the interstate if I have to go to dreaded Virginia Beach. Shit, at this point, I don’t even like riding 460, so I jump onto 10 for as much as I can. That’s state highway 10, not even a US highway – places even more littered with ancient dreams where folks sitting at a picnic table beneath LED lights on a warm Saturday night break into mythical “remember back when…” and memories of those dreams float back up to the aether, one more time, to give the night stars just a little more shine. Or maybe not. All I know is sitting at a picnic table talking shit with folks who have lived real lives is much preferable to capitalism and this fuckin’ abomination of a cultured life we have to lead now. I fell in with the wrong crowd, just by being born in America during this period. Still hoping for a miraculous recovery though, because at my heart, I’m just a country bumpkin, and a born mark. Some of us are dreamers more inclined to get exploited than connivers meant to profiteer. I'm okay with how I am and who I am.

SONG OF THE DAY: Cruisin'

People with big ass cut grass yards think they’re still country, but they ain’t, with their zero turn mowers they hire a Mexican from Honduras to work half the time anyways, killing all the plantain and dandelions and buttercups, trying to make it all the same, nice and smooth and no questions ever asked, like a cop’s skull. That ain’t country; country is a frankensteined Snapper that can’t nobody but one guy who lives at a crossroads can fix, and even he wonders where the fuck you got it, even though he sold it to you (partial trade for some truck rims you had). Or better yet, country is struggling behind a “self” propelled push mower that’s had an existential crisis for at least a decade, and ain’t been self-propelled since before everything was Obama’s fault, because your yard’s too fucked, combination of hills and ruts and rocks and chunks of metal that the Snapper would just shatter into pieces (or at least the blade would) so you pick and choose your paths around the obstacles, like life itself, pushing the push mower like a fifty pound barbell that chops the earth sideways, choking out on chunks of month-long grasses, because who the fuck has time to be fucking around cutting grass unless the weather is bad, when you can’t cut it anyways? Country is finally cutting the yard in nine parts over thirteen days, and you probably should’ve already started over again, four days back, but you feel good about how that one spot looks, so you cruise up to the country store and get a big ol’ Gatorade, traditional orange or lemon lime, none of that antifreeze looking bullshit, and ride back with the windows down and air conditioning on full blast, feeling pretty damn good that none of your snooty ass neighbors are gonna judge your yard for at least 48 hours, maybe even 72.

SONG OF THE DAY: Troubles of the World

Neighbors on both sides pay this ol’ boy to cut their grass, and so did the people that owned this one before I got it last fall. I ain’t paying to get my grass cut, sorry, it’s not that big a yard. So I got a push mower, but I ain’t cut it all yet. Fuck it, it’s just grass. I’d rather blast funk gospel, watch the kittens dive into the air trying to catch butterflies, watch the redbuds turn pinker at the edge of the woods, and just sit there in my MY GRASS IS TALL t-shirt, stacking quartz rocks on old giant metal springs I found at the railroad tracks. As long as I keep the springs upright and the quartz above the tallest grass, I’m doing good. Who the fuck heard of having grass you pay somebody to cut instead of a bunch of junk springs with giant rocks on top? What kinda fuckin’ world is this we’ve made?

SONG OF THE DAY: Where She At

Sometimes I realize I don't live in an apartment building with picnic tables in the center area where we hang out and play dominos or spades because the apartments are hot as fuck and all they have is window units but they're old window units and plus that's expensive to run so the cost to comfort level is not that good, but also you can't leave the windows open all the time because lolol this is America, motherfuckers will take your shit when you're not paying attention, so we hang out at the picnic tables, hoping for a breeze, enjoying when the sun is setting down behind the building top so we're in the shade, enjoying our shared existences. Normally I don't ever think about how that's not my life at all, but whenever I listen to Z.Z. Hill, it comes to mind, because I imagine we'd listen to a lot of Z.Z. Hill sitting out there when it's too hot to be inside.

SONG OF THE DAY: Smooth Operator (Chopped Not Slopped)

I know y’all all got little fancy blue tooth speakers that look like friendly robot scat which are convenient and easy to carry about out of doors and easily connect your wirelessly transmitted cybertron devices to, but please don’t forget about the importance of yard speakers. When I say yard speakers, I don’t mean specifically designed outdoor sound systems on some fancy assed rich white people who live in Florida ass patio area with them speakers attached to buildings all up high, which usually also has outside grill that’s essentially just exterior gas-controlled shit that people heat up pre-made patties and sausages and call this “grilling” in the most basic yet consumptive possible fashion. I mean straight up yard speakers – old ass 25 pound wood cabinet speakers that used to be your inside speakers but you got better bigger louder inside speakers now, or maybe not louder because these old ass wood speakers were just too damn powerful inside wherever you rent or live and was turning your entire inside existence into a subwoofer just too damn much to peaceably enjoy. Or maybe you got a baby now and the ol’ lady gets pissed when the baby gets woke up so you relegated the good speakers to yard speakers for the sake of still being able to blast them. Or maybe you got enough speaker cable your indoor powerful ass speakers get transitioned into yard speakers. But the purpose of the yard speaker is to go the fuck outside, and boom music throughout the yard and hopefully beyond. If you’re close to neighbors, either have good taste in music or point the yard speaker in the least offensive direction (or most offensive if you hate your neighbors, which is not uncommon either, because there’s a lot of assholes out there). Obviously a yard speaker needs a source of sound, and that’s what makes all the little robot shit speakers so exciting to new-fangled-minded people, because there’s less work involved. But really if you got a stereo, it’s not that hard to run speaker wire out through a window, back into your yard speakers which are resting on a milk crate off the ground or maybe on a wooden chair you keep for yard speaker pedestal. My best set-up ever was permanent yard speakers (meaning they didn’t go inside any more), sitting on milk crates, with little tarps to cover them up. Eventually the tarps got weathered and wore out, but I wanted to see how tough these yard speakers were – old 1970s thickness tested by legit weather. They lasted a long while, long enough to get new tarps once or twice, but eventually even they gave out. The cool thing is we live in an abundance of old shit in America, at least until they stopped making good shit, but we are still in the closing window of there being tons of extra yard speaker sets available at thrift stores/junk shops/online for cheap and even free. So I got more yard speakers, in my case at the too good to throw away carport at the local rural dump, where I found three sets of yard speakers over the years. Sadly we live in an era of diminishing returns on America’s greatest period of yard speaker production, which it should be noted coincides with the historical birth of hip hop, and that DJ Kool Herc as well as other early DJs were essentially carrying around yard speakers to build loud sound systems that ran off public park power to create early hip hop shows. The communal nature of the yard speaker as well as the historical importance in American hip hop sub-culture cannot be overlooked. Having yard speakers that you’ve sort of stumbled upon, yet cared enough to make loud as fuck and only for playing the best taste levels of music, this is important shit to a true lounger. That’s why the commodity of installing exterior sound systems around your expensive patio set-up at your mortgaged home is not the same. Most loungers don’t own homes, and in fact it is testament to one’s power to lounge that they can build a high quality lounging environment even without the privilege of ownership.
The basic starter pack for any resistant human not about the mundane stagnant normal American existence is tarps, milk crates, and machetes. But if you are forced to remain in place, without accepting stagnancy, a good set of yard speakers is a wonderful addition to your (always) temporary environment, and proves this by still touching on two of those three basics of tarp and milk crate. And as summer yard loungin’ season is now in full effect, and many are in fact enjoying a long weekend right now, I cannot encourage you enough to blast some nice screwed and chopped music through your yard speakers. We’ll save discussing the merits of dominoes vs. Spades vs. small stakes poker next time.

SONG OF THE DAY: Set Tripping

Fuck it, I'll listen to more Boo Yaa Tribe, sitting in the back yard with the bluetooth speaker dangling out the window, reading about the history of ghazals. Violets and dandelions everywhere, here in this strange part of Belmont, Charlottesville that's not quite Hogwaller (that's once you pass the BP) but also not really the gentrified part of Belmont just yet, though there is a big ass house they're finishing building up two doors down, and the old lady who legally owns this house I'm renting the basement apartment of had a stroke and is in her 90s, so once she passes, who knows what her kids do with these properties. Sometimes the process of old ways dying literally requires old people dying and the next generation not wanting to fuck with all the work of farming or owning places or working on washing machines or cars, and everything has slowly gotten outsourced to corporations for the past 40 years, and we are fucked.
I often think about weird things that academia doesn't give enough attention to, like how L.A. gangs, which were always geographically based, have been altered by gentrification. Are there hybrid gangs now in certain communities, or new truces and disagreements because of how certain neighborhoods were relocated to certain certain aging devalued subdivisions? American culture is weird, because it's sort of like having all these weird little actual cultures underneath the superficial level of no real culture at all other than absorbing the undergrounds ones into the sunlight until you've bleached them of all their microflora.

SONG OF THE DAY: Lover's Rock (Chopped Not Slopped)

-->

The cultural bookmarks of summer being betwixt Memorial Day and Labor Day kinda fuck me up, because all the other cultural shit I’m supposed to have done – gone on a vacation, sat at the beach, chilled the fuck out – hadn’t really happened. Plus social media is a devil cop, because you see people sitting at the beach going on vacation chilling the fuck out and you wonder what’s wrong with you, or why you ain’t got shit it looks like everybody else got?
Just remind myself I have the heart of a lounger, where the blood pumps slow enough to not allow manufactured drama overtake when shot out from a brain too heavily steeped in poison culture inputs. I was walking a lot all the time, so even if I wasn’t getting planned and paid excursions in one big lump sum, as many nights or mornings or possible I was “getting away”. Acting with the heart of a lounger means you’re trying to build vacation escape endorphins in your every day, and not on some rich man life of leisure shit either, because for a workingman or anyone born and bred far enough down the American pyramid scam that “life of leisure” never been a possibility, you gotta figure out how to keep it light with heavy weight pushing down on your shoulders at all times. It’s doable.
Anyways, if you got a three-day weekend and acting like it’s the end of summer with assorted lounge activities, I hope it’s a blessed couple days of high chill. And if you still gotta work, like many folks do, ironically on Labor Day because our poison culture more concerned with productivity than the power of lounge, and got us all trapped in these financial user agreements which don’t really benefit us, then I hope you have a blessed couple days too. Fuck these devils.

SONG OF THE DAY: Cumbia en do Menor (Norman Cook Rebajada)

Memorial Day is culturally accepted as the beginning of summertime in the ol’ U.S. of America, which to me means the American continents, fuck white nationalism, fuck barbecues I came up in cookout culture. Still get confused when people say “cookout” for the fast food joint and don’t mean actual cookout in the back yard with spades at the picnic table and horseshoe stobs stobbing and kids running around fighting with sticks and not a single motherfuckin’ store bought pasta salad in sight, except maybe that one cousin, which you forgive because lol he don’t know no better.
Summertime for your boy means the screwed music hits overdrive, slow thick humid southern gothic futuristic heat zones means music warped backwards feels about right. The screw catalog has expanded in all directions (if I had my way) which means immigration (legal or illegal is subject to manmade law not my notion of unified intercontinental Americana) and the internet has helped bring cumbia rebajadas to my ear drum. Shit, immigration meant Colombian cumbia music made it to Mexico in the first place, which ended up in Monterrey and got warped back like you know it would, and then trickled into the rest of the Americas, including southside VA, which now is not southside but sitting at the edge of Cville, in some lime green basketball shorts, bad tattoos bared for the world to see. Fuck it y’all, it’s summer.
