SONG OF THE DAY: What I Am (kudzu'd)

This is a great one slowed down. Juggle that break for hours, in my opinion. As a young mark from the middle of nowhere, I loved this song and loved Edie Brickell. She married a thousand year old man, and I have a horrible headache today.

SONG OF THE DAY: Ghetto Red Hot

There are certain sounds that perfectly encapsulate early ‘90s era hip hop and its influence on other genres, and this was also a time I lived in Richmond and tended to walk downtown with Boogie Brown on Friday afternoons to buy records at Willie’s, and downtown Richmond back then was WAY DIFFERENT. You’d have tons of people hanging out, waiting on the bus, or just kicking it downtown on Broad Street, and cars would be cruising, just BLASTING music, like ungodly levels of blast, but which still sounded crispy clear with immense thump. There’s like 3 or 4 beats that specifically just fire up those memories in my mind, to where I can smell the heaty stank of the city again, and this is one of them.

SONG OF THE DAY: My Thing

Just another simple old jam resurrected from the dustbins by a reissue label. I love both sides of this 45, both sound good slowed, but in the ol’ ancient mp3 phone I play in the car, “My Thing” got the heavier rotation, at regular speed.

SONG OF THE DAY: I'm A Hobo

Just a little Sunday hobo throwback track, because even if the world falls apart, you can hopefully still walk away and disappear. They can never cancel the right to disappear from civilization.

SONG OF THE DAY: Learned the Hard Way

Thought I lucked out and snagged this from the Mango Hill bandcamp a while back, but they were actually out of it. The plate tectonics of physical music trickle down into used bins means there’s a lot of stuff I love that ain’t gonna show up nearby. That’s good though. No matter how global and know-it-all we think we’ve gotten, the physical world still depends on physical movement of matter. The revolution will not be digitized.

SONG OF THE DAY: Barnyard Banjo Pickin'

Stringbean was sagging before any of y’all was sagging. To be honest, when I tried unsuccessfully to learn banjo last year, I just wanted to be the New Stringbean. I guess I’m more of a sugar snap.

SONG OF THE DAY: Good Things

About once every 3 years, I want to shave my beard off, completely. It’s usually a sign that the vibes are off and there’s an itch to my soul I need to fix. There’s too many good things in life for the vibes to off.

SONG OF THE DAY: Magic Mountain

I got this on 45 because I love it slowed down and it pairs great after spinning one of my De La Soul 45s, because folks think another De La song is coming on. This is pretty basic DJ shit, but we live in unreal times where basic is complex and a lot of folks have cognitive dissonance to such a strong amount that everything is new every time they click the refresh button, which they don’t even have to click anymore as it gets clicked for us.
I am mostly drawn to non-Eric Burdon War era stuff, but lately I have made some exceptions. Maybe it’s my own cognitive dissonance.

SONG OF THE DAY: Chirpin'

I’m glad I’m not in charge of capitalism, because I would’ve used this jam as a Nextel commercial back in the day, and thus ruined the pure beauty of this overlooked classic. Capitalism ruins everything around me. Dollar dollar bill y’all.

SONG OF THE DAY: Boulevards Theme: Way of Life

I totally thought Boulevards was some old ass Carolina funk band when I first heard it. I guess it was wishful thinking on my part. This is a great fuckin’ album though, and like all sensible artists, you can get it on Bandcamp, which is where sensible supporters of artists also go.

SONG OF THE DAY: Abrigame

I do not do streaming so I don’t even know how shit like this ends up not only being in my old iphone collection of songs, but becoming a personal favorite. I poked through my dusty digital attic to figure it out, and this actually came off a Viva El Sabado: Hits De Disco Pop Peruano 1978-1989. Latin American funk disco synthesized in the Global South. A split 45 exists of this, put out by Virrey Records in Peru, so it’s on my list to ask the dude in the Peruvian record store about next time I do a cumbia order when I’m flush with money enough to pretend the end isn’t near. (It’s always near.)

SONG OF THE DAY: Train 45

Such a weirdly beautiful song. I failed at trying to learn the banjo earlier this year, but mostly because I think I was trying too hard to "learn" and when you listen to something like this, you can hear there's a whole lot more intuitiveness to it than any formal learning will allow for. But it's starting to get cold so maybe I'll try and fail again.

SONG OF THE DAY: Empty Talk

“Empty talk, an empty mind… I’m supposed to be a wise man but I’m wasting my time,” is about as hard as the first couple lines from a song could possibly go. Can’t remember how this song showed up on my ancient iphone doubling as an ipod assorted playlists, but this one was in super high rotation for a while, and I had to get the 45 as soon as I found one not too godawful pricey. This is a goddamn jam right here.
