SONG OF THE DAY: Turn My Back On You

Many years ago, when I was younger and dumber, I drunkenly disparaged Sade’s beauty, mostly to be contrary to a friend. It only happened one night, during one drunken conversation while playing cards. But I carry the memory of these words with great shame. So I am apologizing to the Universe. I’m not sure if doing so on an obscure blog does the trick, but I would imagine the ripples are similar. At least, that is my intention.

SONG OF THE DAY: Aww Shit!

I used to play a lot of Tha Alkaholiks and used to be an alcoholic. I actually got the 12-inch single that was the first beat Madlib made that got released on wax, when he was still part of Lootpack. Tha 'Liks used to be an absolute favorite, so though I don't drink no more, I never gave up them. And I still say, in old head way that references archaic media, Side A of King Tee's Tha Triflin' Album, where Tha Alkaholiks made their debut, is one of the all-time best hip hop tape sides ever.

SONG OF THE DAY: El Ultimo Trago (rebajada)

I’ve decided to be intolerant of drunkards, which unfortunately means I have to exile myself from western civilization, especially with American football season cranking up.

SONG OF THE DAY: Angeline

I don’t really listen to electrified guitar-based music made in the past 25 years to be honest. They kinda gentrified that whole genre, but before we all knew what “gentrification” even meant. I have fond memories, being a natural born piece of shit, of degenerate rock music blasting as the background soundtrack as I made poor choices and did reckless things which culminated in horrible scars and wonderful stories and thankfully no deaths (that I’m aware of). Sometimes I wish there was rock to love, that didn’t sound so master’s degreely and certified organic, but you can’t be mad at the way the world goes, or how art changes to match the people trying to figure out how to do art in this crushing existence we done gave ourselves.

SONG OF THE DAY: El Pachuco

Been in a bit of funk lately, but combatting that by going into abandoned buildings and doodling as many variations of the #25 El Borracho card as I can, paying homage to all the great drunkards I’ve known, but in my personal life but culturally as well. Was looking up choices people used for making an El Pachuco card too, seems like the most common results has 26, which doesn’t make sense to me. There’s a t-shirt that comes up with nice El Pachuco art and using #1, and sure, there’s rooster-esque qualities to a fully zooted pachuco, but I’m not sure I’d give up the chance to have a rooster card in any deck of anything. Roosters are pretty fucking amazing, visually. Seems like maybe #4 would make sense, but I don’t know, it’s not my place.
Anyways, I’ll just keep drawing El Borracho cards (“los borrachos?”) in those old factories that will never open again, marking the years away.

SONG OF THE DAY: Stoned, Slow, and Rugged

Still sober, but life tests me. On a daily basis sometimes. It's the good days that are hardest, strangely enough, when nothing is horribly bad, and you just feel extra chill, and every cellular memory in your body is like, "wow, what a perfect day to go get fucked up by the river." Oh well. In terms of this song title, I'm still hella slow though, probably slower than ever.

SONG OF THE DAY: Love and Happiness

Al Green found god when an angry woman through hot grits on him in the shower. A lot of times I think about what other people’s hot grits in the shower moment might have been. The closest thing was the last night I drank, which was a wandering night the day before Halloween, where I went to see local independent MMA with a friend, we got drunk there, then met another dude and got drunk further. As the night went on, it felt weirdly dark and hellish, and once I got confronted the next day with being a drunkardly asshole, which had happened many times before, it was the first time it actually felt true enough that I wanted to switch it up.
Oddly, it wasn’t really a hot grits moment though, because the slow realization of all the shit I numbed myself to. And even that feels like saying more than I mean to. Al Green hit his stride though, maybe before maybe after or maybe right around the hot grits in the shower. I don’t know, to be honest I don’t listen to much Al Green gospel. But I love Al Green.
