SONG OF THE DAY: Going Home

Notions of home we’re often born into, without stability, to where general geographic areas become home more than specific piece of land – a neighborhood or more expansive area we bounced around while developing our human roots. Often times we’re uprooted, perhaps by economics, perhaps by traumas, maybe weather… who knows, but shit happens, regularly, that blasts stability sideways. I consider myself from southside Virginia in very general sense because my sense of home has taken a couple of body shots over the years, to where the two actual places that are buildings I slept in the most amount of nights of my life aren’t really my legitimate home any more. One I don’t ever want to go back to, to be honest, not that specific house, and I won’t unless somebody dies and familial obligation will force me back. The other, I still have access to, and my not being there is on friendly terms, but it’s also not my home any more because home requires that constant exchange of energy with a place where you see the subtle changes in it and it sees the subtle changes in you. Where I live now does not feel like home, and in fact is even outside that general feeling of home relationship I have with southside Virginia. The shape of things is different, and the culture is close but not the same, and I don’t know, it just don’t feel like home.
So many humans end up living in places that are not home. It’s a fairly common thing actually, and it’s perfectly easy to accept living in a non-home place and make the most of it, but you’re also not home. I thought on this a lot over the course of two events this weekend. First, I helped dig a grave, for a woman being buried at home, next to one of her favorite gardens, and that deep connection to home so impressed me. I’ve attended a couple home burials in the past, and in fact always joke about how, being from southside Virginia, I’ve been to two funerals in junkyards. This is a factual statement, and both were beautiful and completely appropriate events. But digging a grave for a home burial where home was still known, to such a deep level… it impressed me greatly. There is a strength in having a lifetime of connection with a place, one that transcends economics in a lot of ways, which is why when experts tell people from economically depressed places that they need to move to where there are better opportunities, and not everybody jumps at the chance, I can understand that. If you have deep cultural roots to a place, separate from economics, it is not easy to just assume getting a paycheck is enough to tear those roots out and try somewhere else, where there’s no guarantee of financial success.
I also thought about this notion of home during the Mexico/U.S. Gold Cup final, because that was held in Chicago, and essentially any U.S. men’s team match against a Latin American country that is not held in ultra-white spaces like Columbus or Salt Lake City is going to be a road match for the home team. That was the case in Chicago, where the crowd was predominately pro-Mexican team, far more than visible support for the U.S. team. And it got me to thinking of immigration and the political discourse about that, and all the Mexicans and Salvadorans and Hondurans and others who traveled so far from their notion of home, simply to find a decent life. And how you can find that community elsewhere, if there’s enough of you from back home, to build a little slightly stable slice of that back home in a completely different place. I don’t see how anybody could be mad at that. That’s really all any of us want, is to have a home, and feel complete there, and safe, and know there’s a community acting like family to help us when crisis comes up.
Most spiritual mythologies talk about helping strangers, and making them feel at home. That’s a deep concept which seems to be lost upon too many humans these days. To act with compassion, and not just let somebody into your space to sleep on the floor, but to welcome them, make them feel as if it is their home too. It won’t, because home is deeper than one day’s worth of actions – it is woven slowly through time, through many days’ worth of actions, years, even generations. But simply helping somebody to feel at home shows at heart level, not brain level, not politics level – but right-thinking heart level that you understand home cannot be manufactured out of nothing, but you want them to know they are welcome.
It’s a weird feeling not having a strong sense of specific home any more, and there’s a strange restlessness I get sometimes that I think comes from that lack of roots. Like I said, it’s not uncommon, but damn if it doesn’t feel weird, especially on those weird moments where I don’t even realize I don’t feel at home, but then I roll into the general part of the Earth that does feel like home, on a perfectly home-like day that activates all these cellular memories, and it’s just some fucked up moment riding down an old road, and my body and being is like “ahhh, home” beyond my ability to rationalize or understand in intelligent scientific way. True home.

J.J. Krupert Top 13 Countdown - June '11 #1: "Ritual Of The Nile" by J-Boogie's Dubtronic Science

My eldest daughter's name is Gypsy and she is flowering into an insanely artistic and obsessive little young adult. She often asks questions about the methodical madness that is her father, like why do I have notecards with strange little phrases scribbled on them all over the place. Why can't they throw magazines in this one pile of recycling until I look through them for pictures? How come nobody but me can rate songs on the Itunes and why do I only allow for one star to be added at a time? She understands, and is as obsessive as me, because she's pretty much been working exclusively on knitting projects for the past 200 hours of her life, talking about knitting crazy things, piecing it together. But she understands the J.J. Krupert process of songs being played the most and getting on the list, and sometimes plays songs pretty much constantly in the hopes of making me write about them. Then I explained to her that it can only be songs on my gaypod, meaning a lot of the things she forces into the mix won't make it. So what we did was put a batch of songs on there at one point, and she forced her way into my Krupert dorkness. This was that song that made the final list, that she played for like three days straight in her every waking hour, to get on the list. She has been pretty deeply into Egyptian culture the past half a year or so, making paintings and clay structures in honor of it, talking about mummifying a roadkill animal if I'd bring one home if I hit it, wanting me to find Egyptian meditation music, being stoked when I made homemade falafel and told her this was an Egyptian street food. Her most amazing development is being about 87 pages into a composition book, handwriting a full novel based on Egypitan mythology, which is even more insane and ridiculous than I was at age 12, but hey, this is what we have been fermenting on our Bird Tribe compound. But this "Ritual of the Nile" song was her favorite ever at one point and she made me put on this list after understanding my madness and it's methods and using that to place J. Boogie's Dubtronic Science on the list.
This song came from one of the Deep Concentration mixes which I think was on Ohm Records, and my daughter really digs that ambient/electronic with a slight twinge of funk thing. Not really my cup of tea, though I dig this song well enough (hence it's survival on my little stupid Ipod), and enough so that I dug into getting full-length J. Boogie stuff, which entailed me signing up for their email list and getting a free download, which was not very good at all. But I still get a stupid email from J. Boogie's Dubtronic Science every now and then, and I often wonder if J. Boogie has any other possessive bands, or just the Dubtronic Science one, and who the fuck is J. Boogie anyways? Nonetheless, this song is an enjoyable electronic romp down the river, watching snake charmers and belly dancers and little TVs plugged into bicycle-powered batteries with a McDonalds commercial where a terrorist jumps out chasing a cartoon Hunger monster with one of those swashbuckling Arab swords, yelling "FALALALALALALALALA" and as he catches up to hunger and is about to chop it with the sword, or so you think, he finishes yelling "LALALALALAlafel" and whips out a McDonalds falafel sandwich in nutritionless pita and that is all what I imagine floating down the Nile through Egypt to be like, just with more hot, and sand in my glasses, which is so fucking frustrating because I forget and clean them on my shirt, which scuffs them up and makes me see even less, but I never go get new ones because I hate finding an eye doctor that takes my stupid eye insurance, which isn't much of an insurance, and usually just end up going to the guy beside Wal-Mart (which means like three times in my life) and the last time I swear the guy was drunk and didn't pay attention to me so my glasses were kinda fucked when I got them, like didn't seem clear, but eventually my eyes deteriorated to where it made sense or I at least got used to it, and that's still the glasses I have, because I break everything and because of that when something isn't broke - like in three pieces broke, not just scuffed and dirty blemished but not quite broke - I won't replace it. That's just how I am.

(frybread) Reading is Law

Reading hour is now The Law in this compound - and even if the 3-year-old can't yet read, she shall sit with a pile of books and be read upon and soak it in. The 7-year-old, who always thinks she hates reading but then loves it once she gets to the third page of any book, she will do more for herself with this than anything we could homeschool into her brain. The 11-year-old shall fill the gaps of her historical knowledge, and we can pick and choose wretched of the earth sourcebooks so she is not another gung ho patriot-in-training waiting to get older and either think the warhawk retards or the well-read retards are the good guys. I will read wonderful things to inspire me to either dedicate myself to hodge-podging anti-aircraft guns like I feel I should, or commit myself to finding a third world country somewhere that fits our personal Bird Tribe notions of freedom and independence better.
I was just pumping Biggie's "Ready to Die" screwed and chopped and it's sad how hard that spoke to me. Need to take my soul shine tonic me thinks, because I am frustrated with the world I live in, the false fucking promises and the shortcomings of my own doing and the continual thinking that salvation lies in financial windfalls. Fuck that. Let me tell you this my brothers and sisters, I would gladly trade financial exorbitance if a hundred of us never had to struggle again. I am fucking sick and tired of the struggle - as a kid into adulthood and it has weighed me down spiritually at times where I make fun of the light because the light seems like a goddamned joke being played on me.

Friday Love/Hate

I hate, absolutely hate being incapacitated like I have been. It has been nearly three weeks since I first bed-ridded myself, and my nature is not to sit still much at all. Today I was feeling better, and walked through the yard twice, plus stood around the house inside a lot. Tonight that made me feel like parts of my organs were falling south through my crotch. I am done with it. But I’m not. Frustration is a motherfucker, and I am a frustrated motherfucker.

I love the strange world we live though. I have a friend dumpster diving for my pigs tomorrow. That’s really the only thing I could think of. People are bringing us food, which is really great and I appreciate it, but I am craving all the bad things in life. I want to wander back roads to weird defunct steel mining towns and eat at shitty Chinese buffets and take pictures of railroad tracks beside smokestacks. Shit man, I’ve started taking pictures of things from my bed, which is a very difficult canvas to continue to find inspiration. At least my narcotic prescription ran out so I have my brain back to full functionality, though this boring as fuck love/hate probably is not a testament to it. Oh well… I thought I would’ve wrote 9 novels by now while laid up, but it’s been physically impossible to stay comfortable for more than an hour or two on the best days of the past three weeks. I ain’t bitching, because most all the world has it worse than me. And this whole thing had kinda been a test for me to make sure the path I’ve chosen to switch up on in the past three or four months is the path I really want… and it is. Fuck you World. I’m gonna take your ass down. Bully me all you want, but I got you. Now, if you’ll excuse me, my water bottle is empty, so I’m going to take four minutes to wiggle my way upright off the couch, take four minutes to walk the twelve or so normal steps around the corner into the next room to the refrigerator, think how I want something to eat but not be able to bend down to open the bottom crisper with baby carrots in it, so I’ll eat a cheese stick, take four minutes back to my couch aka nighttime bed, position myself to be barely comfortable, click the button on the remote to see what time it is and how long it’s been since I took Advil or Tylenol, focus on whatever Iron Chef episode is now on my TV screen… (By the way, BIG motherfuckin’ UPS to Russ Mac in Georgia for sending all those DVDs a while back. I never actually watched too much of the Iron Chefs, but have been working my way through them all this week. I want to have that book out too, to full-on nerd out, but I only remember at night when everyone’s asleep and it’s in the peach crate by the toilet below where I can reach. Yeah, I can’t even put socks on right now.) Then I’ll sleep uncomfortably for a little while, wake up, let the internet make me a little stupider for a few minutes, click the Iron Chef back to whatever episode I fell asleep on, and repeat it all, in a slightly different order. In the morning, I’ll be really afraid the toddler is gonna come running in and Superfly Snuka me (like she has done already) so I’ll wake up with the light outside the window and uncomfortable wait for everybody to wake up, when I’ll relocate to the bedroom bed, read a few short stories, think about how awesome this short story I’ve been planning in my head is about someone doing asemic writing in an abandoned school, think about how I’d like to just do that in that old hospital in Staunton by the Frontier Culture Museum rather than write a story, then I’ll think about the hospital and how awesome old abandoned mental institutions are and why they intrigue me so much, which is probably because in the olden days they would’ve just put me there, which would probably be cool because then I could just draw pictures with soot like James Castle or actually do asemic writing all over my walls except I’d be restrained physically so they’d give me paper and probably an electric pencil and I’d make weird drawings like that instead. I actually filled about ten pages of a notebook trying to work up a new personal graffiti font because I don’t like the one I naturally have developed as it’s not cholo enough. I got some good things going on early, but was having trouble with the second row of letters (H-N) from that toy I learned my alphabet from as a kid, which I still divide the alphabet up by (A-G, H-N, O-T, U-Z). And I really didn’t want to skip rows, so I just worked on A through G a whole fucking lot because I just couldn’t wrap my head around a good way to do an H. That’s part of the problem right there, trying to “wrap my head” around something instead of letting my head unleash itself upon the dilemma. We are too filled with false knowledges about minor things to really allow ourselves to unleash anymore. I am not sure where I am going with this – probably nowhere, just rambling, like always, but without a point, like often. But my ass is starting to hurt so I’m going to shut down the laptop and shift myself painfully about two inches one way, an inch back the other, and see how Hiroyuki Sakai and this French dude do in this lamb battle. I’ll probably fall asleep and wake up craving Aladdin’s from Richmond circa 1996, but hey, my mind, it’s a fucking thing, what which lets things in and shakes around like Boggle and then things come back out and I just go, “Hmmm, intriguing idea,” and then worry about work because there’s so much to do when I get back.

J.J. Krupert Top 13 Countdown – September '10 #2: “Carmelita” by G.G. Allin

Woke up this morning, feeling good had to thank god, because yesterday was funky. Funky inside my mind, in my heart, and outside was drizzle cold rains all day long, constant. Heart has been racing sometimes at night, like it’s going to explode, and I have to close my eyes and concentrate on settling my pulse. Mind was stuck in the muck all day, about what has not come to be and what seems like it never will. But this morning, riding in to work, it was bright and clouds were layered across the sky, had that dark blue bottom shading to them, white on top, none of it puffy so much as fresh smears of non-rain across a crisp soft blue background. Trees are flashing color right now, and I’ve been making it out of bed early as fuck to catch the newborn edge of the day, and sitting around at home at night trying to force a few thousand words out even when fatigue is hammerlocking my eyebrows together.
I realized riding in to work this morning though, that what I need more than anything is shelter from the shelter. Looking at the tree colors in the distance, panty shot skyline wide open, I didn’t want to be in no buildings or cities or towns or not even inside fences that barely barbed wire wrapped around immense acreages of semi-wildness. We build all these shelters from the outside world, create air conditioned creature comfort for ourselves, have hyberboosted the technological distractions of our lives in the past decade, and really at the end of all that braided copper wires like a noose around our necks, all we fucking need is to be outside of it all again.
I was explaining to the oldest kid tonight about feral children, and Oxana Malaya who still prefers to run with the dogs than stay with the humans, and my kid was like, “If I found a kid in the wild, I’d leave them, so that they could be happy.” I didn’t have the heart to tell her that you’d get in trouble for doing even that, just leaving it all alone and degenerate back into perfect wildness. She’s only 11, and full of all those idealistic views of the world that any pre-teen girl would be. You can’t be wild anymore, or it’s hard as fuck. So many goddamned shelters sheltering ourselves from us. Sometimes, at the end of the day, when I’m not seeing the sky and mountains and semi-wild horizon to run off into like a naked penis, and I look around and see the complexes and interstate on-ramps and all the other cars, I can understand how pyromania starts. De-sterilize it all with raw fire.
When G.G. Allin went acoustic, that’s about all I can stomach from him. The outlaw scumfuck stuff was shock value, trying to scream at the bricks stacked into imprisoning shelters. It’s his acoustic shit that sounds to me like the true feral music, to be played beside pallet fires along railroad tracks. Too much music that is supposed to be crazy as fuck is just more bricks and mortar and stifling ass premeditated orderliness. Wild feels good, not angry. Angry is smashing your head against all the walls hoping to see a glimpse of what I saw this morning.
And still I just went to work and sat around, “working”. Should’ve left all this shit behind me, carving idle words into underpass concrete with railroad spikes. But here I am, tethered to myself, talking some bullshit inside the robots.
