SONG OF THE DAY: Summer Breeze (kudzu'd)

The current horrors of existence can feel like a lot. Seemingly, from what we "know" - which, we all need to be reminded, has always been a curated flow of information, with the hand that curates sometimes heavier than others - hope can easily get lost in the fog of comprehension. But when you feel that smothering hopelessness descend from your brain into the edges of your heart, I'll remind you that there is never hopelessness in the croak of a frog from a murky swamp of earth and water. The cicadas, even in the heaviest most humid and insufferable heat, always build a crescendo of ancient (and futuristic) harmonies without a filter of hopelessness. What we have just is what it is. We are neither doomed nor blessed, necessarily. We just are. And salvation from our own mistakes always lingers in the shadows that are unseen. In fact, the shadow dwellers have more freedom than most, not just a freedom from the false capital letter Freedom that is now a highly sought after and well marketed brand of boot across your throat, but also from the ups and downs of doom and hope. The contrast is not as pronounced in the shadows, not nearly as exaggerated by the filters of algorithm and bias and mental unwellness that is foundational for the system of consumer exploitation we are living in.
So as the summer breeze blows in this week, seemingly hotter than ever (at least where I lay my head), with records being broken as far back as records have been kept, keep in mind that you are surviving it still, one day at a time. That does not mean it will get easier. But that also does not mean it will perpetually get harder. Whatever it is about the human mind that craves an unsustainable bar chart climbing or descending towards an impossible hope or doom, that is nowhere to be replicated in nature. Balance is always maintained by the Universe. And though humanity may put itself at risk, I take solace in the memory of Neanderthals, who co-existed and had relations with Homo sapiens for thousands of years. And there is absolutely no reason why we can't be some of the stubbornly existential humans who dwell happily in the shadows, for longer than humanly possible, according to all the bar charts ever drawn.

SONG OF THE DAY: I Only Have Eyes For You (kudzu'd)

Blind spots in the surveillance state should not be shared with everybody. Toys will burn your best liminal semi-autonomous zones by telling the wrong people about it, or using the wrong robot technology to talk about it. You should be in the practice of visiting at least 3 places a week where everybody knows that not only is it expected you won’t have a smart phone on you, but you should’ve cut it off at least 2 (urban) to 10 (rural) miles away beforehand. The surveillance state will never figure out how to capture data of the entire Earth, and it will struggle to keep up with sorting through the data it can capture, even with the flawed aid of artificial intelligence. Exploit the margins, As it’s always been, when you find a crack in the systems built around us all, rather than point it out, you should stick something hard into it and start wiggling it to make the crack bigger and bigger. “But what if the system is good?” Lmao, don’t be a mark.

SONG OF THE DAY: Be Thankful For What You Got (kudzu'd)

The seven questions I ask myself every morning, to maintain proper perspective (and sanity in these times of institutional decline):
1: Am I fed?
2: Do I have shelter?
3: Is there a valid physical threat I have to either fight or run from today?
4: Are there others I share a loving relationship with in safe, mutual, and ongoing ways?
5: What is the bare minimum of actual maintenance needed for my life today?
6: Previous question considered, can I do anything to make the end of toay better than the beginning of it?
7: Can I maintain my pokerface of simple acceptance when the Universe deals any new cards to my hand today?

SONG OF THE DAY: Gates of Hell

Masked Assassins always lurk around every corner, looking to chop off a true beard. True beard and fake beard discourse has always been stifled in our culture, because we live in a Great Time of Fake Beards. You see them, in fact, donning masks, and being the Secret Police lately, looking to kidnap people at work, on a “per head” bounty quota where the more they disappear people, the fatter their paycheck gets. These are fake beards, and you need not shave their face, because when they pull the balaclava down, the weakness of their bed is obvious. It is moisturized by the Yakubian propaganda they climb into through their handheld portals. A true beard is more akin to a blackberry bush, an as wild and wonderful as the worst towns in West Virginia. True beards cannot be trimmed, except by fire. This is also how a true beard’s soul is, because it is powered by heart (fire organ) and not brain (easily poisoned well of consciousness).
Thus, Masked Assassins lurk, working for the devil state, hoping to steal a true beard’s wizardly wisps of contrarian knowledge. But even if they chop it off, it’s a false victory, because the wisps have grown inward as long as they’ve grown outwards, and the visual hairs return more rapidly than a fake beard could ever hope to grow it (with all his fancy pseudo-scientific beard oil in the world). And the Masked Assassins can never chop the internal beard of a true beard. So they concentrate on poisoning more minds and growing the ranks of the false beards. But they are all weak-souled men, and they will once again scrape the false beards from their faces to appear as smooth as a baby’s ass, because they have no elderly wisdom accumulated over the generations, and desire that childlike smoothness, in both themselves and their partners. Though they appear strong right now, they are inherently weak, and a true beard will always outlive these incursions of unlounge.

SONG OF THE DAY: Crees Que Soy Sexy?

I shall always appreciate people gyrating sexually who don’t look like HBO Max prestige TV ready characters visually. Ugly people are immensely beautiful, and not the true uglies. We all only have one body we are imprisoned inside of upon our Earthly existence, thus it is a good idea to maximize your serotonin induction. Fuck the haters (but not literally).

SONG OF THE DAY: Disco Dan

This is a song from South Africa, put out in 1976, so it's technically not about Cool Disco Dan, infamous DC graffiti legend. But also it is. The Legend of Cool Disco Dan documentary is available on those free streaming platforms, and doesn't seem to be on Internet Archive yet. Not sure where you can download it for safekeeping once the internet is purposefully crashed. Watch it while you can to get some inspiration for scribbling messages around town.

SONG OF THE DAY: I've Got Bills To Pay

Hoping to go to the discount shopping store today to stock up on giant sacks of flour and rice. Kinda funny right now because the consumer identity preppers aren’t really prepping, because they feel like President Musk and his old orange puppet are the culmination of what they hoped for. But shit’s already gotten insane the past two weeks (half the country afraid they gonna lose their jobs, planes falling out the sky, cruel executive orders telling people they shouldn’t exist), and it’s only going to get worse. And there are no guardrails actually. We were always taught there were guardrails, but who knew all it took was somebody to come along and say, “Nah, that’s cool. I’m just gonna do whatever the fuck I want.”
And while, if you’re paying attention to all this stuff in real time, it’s very scary, people throughout history around the world also still just live their lives. Many other places in the world have gone through this, and the exception of America we were all taught isn’t true. People can put their head down, exist through chaos, and if necessary stand up in large crowds and yell, “This is too damn much.” I’d suggest stocking up on food, because prices are about to get crazy, and supply chains are about to be broken. And I’d also say plan on standing outside somewhere with a bunch of people, yelling, “Fuck you, make me.”

SONG OF THE DAY: Sin Control (kudzu'd)

Just vibing to the rising temperatures in this old house in rural America, about to break out the window fan arsenal to point in at night and out in heavy sunlight. Got a couple window units upstairs in the kids’ rooms, but I don’t fuck with the conditioned air. If it’s gonna keep getting hotter and the electric grid eventually fails sporadically, gotta get used to it. It’s weird to me folks that think survivalism is having an expensive generator that they financed. That’s temporary survival at best. You gotta have life skills and the ability to deal with bullshit. And hot ass days is dealing with bullshit.
But this is also the sweet spot, because even as it cracks 90 degrees god awfully early in the calendar year, the house still has that nice cool earth floor basement shooting cold up through the floor. Winter hadn’t been baked out the house’s bones yet. Come August, it’s gonna be different, and my sweating ass will probably be cussing the heat and wondering about getting one of those new-fangled mini-splits. Anything that’s gotta get financed though is out of my price range.
I actually hate that about green energy and generators, or getting solar panels. All it is in America is a financing scam, and you don’t save money, and you don’t save the environment unless you got the money to throw away on it, and everything is filtered through the prism of “how can we make an industry off this that can extract additional wealth?” It’s such bullshit. That’s why I look forward to grid collapse some days. All this bullshit won’t last. It never does. Wintertime comes for every self-important empire.

SONG OF THE DAY: Pops

Yesterday would’ve been my pop’s 68th birthday, except he died at 47. Life don’t always have storybook endings, in fact, for most folks, it rarely does. I try to remind myself there is no storybook ending, no grand culmination, and to be thankful for each day that I get, because not everybody still got it. It’s easy to get lost in the resentment and anger of what you don’t got, and how maybe your path don’t look as easy as them folks you’re looking at over there who appear to have a good level of comfort, and even sometimes might be looking back at you with an obvious amount of judgment. Fuck ‘em. Forget ‘em. Be thankful for where you’re at as much as you can. And if you’re not happy, shake shit up a little, fix what don’t feel right without screwing up what already feels pretty good. It ain’t easy when you come from “head first into the wall” types like many of us do. But if it was easy, you wouldn’t know what to do with it anyways, because you ain’t even used to that.
I’m thankful for my pops. He wasn’t perfect, and he lost the fight against his own demons. But he had a good heart for the most part, and he taught me how to talk magnificent shit with an unexplainable confidence. He also taught me about “the power” and how to get into a zone with the universe where nothing can fuck with you. It’s not easy to do that either, but I’m always thankful for those moments when I’m in that zone and can feel it coursing through my every action. That’s when I know I’m my most right I can be with everything. It hadn’t happened a lot lately, but there’s still moments where I’m on that wave. I guess that’s why storybook endings are such a lie to begin with, because it’s all ebbs and flows, and riding waves or fighting from drowning. And it’s just gonna keep on being like that, if you’re lucky enough to survive the day.

SONG OF THE DAY: Watermelon Hangin' On The Vine

Been thinking a lot lately on how the term “survivor’s guilt” ain’t exactly right, because it’s not guilt you suffer from. It’s just all the shit you’ve seen up close that exploded those around you, and threatened to injure you – either directly or from their psychic shrapnel – it builds up and builds up, and becomes heavy. There’s a heaviness to your existence because you saw all that and are still here, and maybe even relatively unscathed if you’ve been blessed by the universe to navigate it as such. Guilt’s the wrong term because it suggests shame, or something was done wrong, and you’re not really even a survivor because you still got that heaviness on your soul, and it tinges how you think, hopefully for the better so that you try to lighten the psychic load of those closest to you. And you have to lighten it for them, or else you run the risk of accidentally laying down more of those obstacles, and perpetuating them cycles of needing to survive things that got nothing to do with breathing air or eating food or getting sleep. The older I get, the less I believe in complicated answers to things, and in fact it seems we way over-complicate everything we get to thinking too hard about (as individuals or as collective species), and that leaves so many extra steps for all psychic obstacles to get laid by bad spirits. I know I’ve got a heaviness because of the path I’ve walked in life, but that motivates me to help others feel lighter. And that helps this heaviness of mine feel easier to carry as well. Ain’t a fuckin’ ounce of guilt to that.

SONG OF THE DAY: New Improved Funk

Funk is a wonderful umbrella of a music genre. In fact, umbrella’s a bad term… let’s call is shade tree instead. Funk is a wonderful shade tree of a musical genre, which covers to much ground. All the genres I don’t love, whenever they creep over to get up under the funk shade tree, I start to enjoy them immensely. There are some of my basic thoughts on funk during this three thousand degree day of wretched humidity that might kill us all in a couple decades, unless we learn to grow more shade trees of funk, metaphysically and physically.

SONG OF THE DAY: La Burbuja (rebajada)

I practice shaking my ass in a masculine yet loose and fluid way 15 minutes every day (minimum), jamming out cumbia rebajada. It’s like yoga, but for loungers. My blood pressure has gone down, my credit score has gone up, and more importantly, I just feel better!

SONG OF THE DAY: Polk Salad Annie

Elvis Presley popularized this song, and is well-known for ripping off black artists. But in this case, he ripped off a white one, although I guess the originator and composer of it - Tony Joe White - probably got paid, so it wasn't necessarily a rip off. I'm sure Tony Joe White's raggedy swamp ass lived off the royalties of Elvis for the rest of his life. Mostly when I hear this song, I realize how much I've forgotten from reading Euell Gibbbons' Stalking the Wild Asparagus back in the day. One day wild foods will be our only foods. Then again, Euell Gibbons famously ate a bicycle one time, so the future is hard to really figure out. Shit, the present is hard to figure out.

SONG OF THE DAY: Machette

I recently realized I hadn’t bought any machetes in a long time, which worried me, although as I thunk about it, I realized I have them stashed throughout the house, to where you’re never actually more than 15 feet away from a machete (if you know where they are… which I do). But also I could get that weapon calculus down to 10 feet if I got some more. I hate our consumer capitalist bullshit society which has propped up this American Empire with extreme waste of resources, our own individual wealth, and just the entirety of the Earth to be honest. But there’s still some things you can never have too much of, like machetes, milk crates, tarps, pieces of rebar… all those basic foundations for survival during tight times or thriving during complacent periods. And you don’t need to be fancy about none of those things. You can find $200 machetes online if you want, but if you’re getting a $200 machete, you’re missing the entire point of machetes in my opinion. I mean, you don’t want a cheap machete that dulls immediately and can’t be sharpened, just like you want a decent mil tarp as well. Milk crates are milk crates for the most part, and with rebar, quarter inch isn’t as strong as half inch, but you’ll never run out of uses for quarter inch rebar. Trust me, it’s universally useful.
