SONG OF THE DAY: The Fluid

The other evening I stopped to eat at a diner/soul food restaurant after walking behind a traveling protest through a neighborhood. I hadn’t meant to eat, but passing by Mel’s, it occurred to me if any place had chicken and gizzards in town at that time, maybe Mel’s did. They didn’t, but I got a burger and greens and mac-n-cheese anyways, and sat out front eating, listening to the dude over by me talking about what he was about to get into while his ol’ lady sat there as well. “We drinkin’ vodka tonight, she can’t handle me when I’m on that Hennessey.” She shook her head. “Yeah, I get stupid off that Hennessey.”
The protest ultimately was about racism, and had built off a string of domino events that began with the suggested removal of a confederate monument. Don’t really feel like getting into all that because the past week has been very tiring, and in fact the resurgence of energies from the week of this time of the calendar last year has also been tiring. We lived in a police state locally, in certain sectors, and it left one exhausted from hyper-awareness and fear. I lived in Richmond in the ‘90s during the height of its worst murder rates, and had hyper-awareness and fear then, but nothing like this. The fear of militarized police fucking you up is worse because you know there’s no recourse, no institution to escape to. It is the institution.
I talked my ragged dirtgod shit style, flashing them country dimples to the lady at the counter, and of course she laughed at my silly ass. Finally had my food, chowed the fuck down, and after wandering like 20 miles on foot that day, damn them greens and mac-n-cheese was replenishing as fuck. I had planned on walking home, still another mile away, but after all that, I was wiped out, so texted a friend who had said she’d give me a ride if I needed.
Sat on the bus stop bench (always sitting on bus stop benches it seems), and there was a poster for an upcoming show stapled into the tree still living here in this non-natural zone, tucked into the concrete and small businesses and not yet upgraded buildings to match the economic monstrosities built a couple blocks further west. I felt bad for the tree for a second, as I always do when I see things stapled into a tree. But also trees don’t go out like that. One of my favorite things to find in the woods wandering is when you cross an abandoned barbed wire fence that had been stapled into a tree and the tree grew around the wire, eventually just overtaking it so it looks like the wire belongs to the tree. An even more favorite aspect to that favorite is when the fence is no longer a fence so it’s just a piece of wire sticking out the tree and you realize somebody tried to put up fences somewhere along the way, but nature took back over, and fuck your fences, they’re gone now.
I want to be resilient like that, knowing the fences are there, feeling them stapled into my existence, but still being like, “fuck it” and continuing to grow and survive and in fact thrive and just overpower the fence nonetheless. Resilient like a stubborn ass tree, working fingers into the underground for water, and stretching towards the sunshine. That’s my fuckin’ jam.

World Cup Tanka: BELGIUM vs. JAPAN (Match 54)

top half of bracket
absolutely stacked, but Belgium's
still a contender

no one's looked as good when they're
firing on all cylinders

Japan lawyer balled
their way into knockout stage,
and ain't samurais

nonetheless, any team left
has chance to tip apple cart

no reason Belgium
shouldn’t dominate this
match most entirely

they ought to King Leopold
Japan as if the Congo

they’re definitely
probing early, controlling
(euphemist)attack

[perhaps Japanese tanka
practice manifests shock]

other than clearance,
fancy FIFA ball rarely
makes the far left end

suddenly Japan attacks,
which should help counter-attack

except second half
begins with Yamaguchi's
shock goal breaking draw

except no shock - Inui
follows up with a second

maybe I was too
quick to dimiss them as not
modern samurai

they are outrunning Belgium;
Vertonghen arcs high head goal

afro Fellaini
cleans up to equalize -
we've got brand new match

last minute of stoppage time,
Japan takes a weak corner

Courtois feeds bumrush,
Lukaku plays big dummy,
drawing defenders

cross goes clean to Chadli's foot,
who drives it home - Belgium wins

Sunday, June 24

World Cup Tanka: JAPAN vs. SENEGAL (Match 31)

Japan played man-up
against Colombia, and
got a shocking win

still almost lost though, so don't
read too much into their win

first African team
to win was Senegal; such
an exciting team

stylish manager, hype ass
supporters - whole aura lit

Group H upside down,
outright win by either team
eliminates faves

Senegal scoring early -
Mane's knee reflects punch out

Senegalese drums
take over stadium, 'til
Inui strikes back

Japanese flood the box and
equalize - fighting spirit

Senegal applies
pressure all at once like no
others - Wague scores

celebrations are short-lived
because K. Honda enters

Asian dude playing
Liga MX? that's hardcore
metaphysics shit

clusterfuck leaves open goal,
and Honda equalizes

finish all even,
Group H has too many teams
in my opinion

this Japanese team's grown on
me, and still love Senegal

World Cup Tanka: COLOMBIA vs. JAPAN (Match 15)

have an amiga
de futbol at work, and she's
Colombiana

she is wearing national
team jersey, like all big games

I'm indifferent
about Japan for most part;
they don't seem soccer

what's Yukio Mishima
thinking on football culture?

barely five minutes
in and Carlos Sanchez plays
goalkeeper - red card

Kagawa converts, and now
Colombia's only ten

Falcao goes into
footballing thespian mode,
seeking penalty

Quintero pulls schoolboy trick
on free kick for trickling goal

we remain firmly
drawn unto the second half,
which moves slower speed

Japan is such a boring
team, this has always been true

passionless football
can survive group stages, but
gets knocked the fuck out

(I've not mentioned how ugly
the World Cup football looks yet)

Colombia looked
fatigued, ten men wearing down,
as was Ospina

corner kick feeds Osako
header - Japan has shock win

Natsu Basho 2017 Honour Tanka Day 1: TAKEKAZE (0-1)

as sumo's small (yet
girthsome) pond fills with fresh-faced
tadpoles, old frogs fight

Takekaze has stubborn
spirit; also many years

sumo injuries
accumulate, rendering
body resistant

will subjugates body for
a while, but not forever

Takekaze's tossed
by young Shodai on day one,
without resistance

the old frog's path through the pond
winding down, without much space

MNZ: National Doll World Nov/Dec 1987

So I got a stack of magazines from some dude on the Ebays, and got some old doll magazines thrown into the mix. I use them for pictures that I add to my shoebox of images that is being used for the Rojonekku Psychic Trigger tumblr that will update once a week, to keep the wandering disciples of the Rojonekku Philosophy pointed in different directions in their various meanders. Anyways, these doll magazines are creepy as fuck as it is, with one having a design for a veiled Saudi Arabian doll (different times!). But I just happened to accidentally thumb backwards to an article of a little girl who looks like she's probably in some sort of office job now, holding a doll with a little hole in the middle. So here is the article, in its entirety, which disturbed me immensely.
A Deadly Doll by Maxine Hiett
Shown in the picture is 10-year-old Stephanie Kaiser, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Kaiser, holding what looks to be a beautiful little 9" Japanese doll.
This doll was found by Stephanie's grandfather, Lloyd M. Chatt, when he served with the U.S. Marine Corps in the South Pacific during World War II.
These dolls were filled (in the hole center, shown in pictures) with explosives and used as mines. If a soldier saw one and picked it up to take home to his little girl or a loved one, it would explode and kill him.
Mr. Chatt happened to get into a warehouse where these dolls were stored and had not yet been filled with explosives. The doll was given to Stephanie by her grandmother, Frances Chatt, after the death of her grandfather.

Good stuff, hunh? Nice uplifting story for a young doll aficionado. And our human ability to trick each other into death and dismemberment has only gotten more creative and advanced and destructive since then.

First of Da Month

So I've started a print zine that hopefully I'll have a new issue of every two months. It's gonna be limited as fuck, doling out copies (along with some sort of retarded Raven care package) to the top three each month in my very personalized and non-scientific Mailed Shit To My Post Office Box monthly standings. I figured beginning of each month, I'd list out the top five, at this point a few them are cumulative from previous mailbox donations, along with the rating (on a 100-point scale) they accumulated to be in the top three, or be in the fourth or fifth spot to position themselves for next month, as once you make the top three, you reset to zero, thus hopefully encouraging a healthy pipeline of wacky and useful shit to my post office box, so long as I can deliver a worthwhile print-only zine to make it worth their while, along with whatever other dumb shit I put together to send out as well. Here are the top 5 mailbox rankings for May 1, 2010...
#1: RussMac in Georgia - dude hooked me up with the motherload of Iron Chef episodes, which for some reason are still not available on normal people DVD, along with the Iron Chef handbook, plus a ton of other wacky shit like space documentaries (perfect for stoners, as well as 11-year-old homeschoolers) and old UFCs and shit. 87.3 points.
#2: Pitz Dogg in North Cackalacka - an old roommate who seriously slid into second place on the last day of April by mailing me a literal styrofoam cooler of beer. Like I went to check my PO Box and there was the wonderful yellow card that says, "Go pick up some shit from the counter fool!" and I went and the guy came back out with a fucking styrofoam cooler with LIQUID and FRAGILE stamped all over it. I took it home and it was full of Canuck beer, mostly some Don De Dieus (which translates from Franch as "gangsta of god" beer) and a few Maudites (which do not jibe well with the sudden 90 degree heat we have in central Virginia). 64.2 points.
#3: Ten Dollar David in RVA - another old roommate of mines, who apparently broke his leg in severe fashion like where he couldn't walk for a while and now has a metal rod inside of him so all he did was sit around and do nothing. He got his nickname from me because the first time (and actually only time) I ever road a passenger train, I woke up on a hardwood floor wondering where the fuck I was. I had been living between couches in Richmond at the time, but did not recognize this particular hardwood floor. The night before had been a blur of whiskey and painkillers and purple passion and cop parties and chopping some girl with a samurai sword, and apparently I ended up in Williamsburg, at David's apartment, talking shit to his roommates, who he had just moved in with like two days before. Awesome. I had no money on me that I could find, so I had to borrow $10 from David to take the Amtrak back to Richmond. Except he had no money either, so we had to go to his work, some restaurant, where I sat around uncomfortably drinking a free water while he bummed the money from his boss. Then I went and bought a train tickets and laid on the bench sweating a thick and stanky whiskey sweat while the train station guard dude cut up the radio so I could listen to the Detroit Lions/Washington Redskins game that was going on that day. A wonderful memory. Oh yeah, what David had mailed me was a couple beers, plus a soccer magazine. 35.7 points.
#4: Jersey Jared - just missed the cut, and had previously hooked me up with like a giant case of fancy pumpkin truffles, plus frou-frou coffee, right about the time I started drinking frou-frou coffee, so long as it was cheap. And it don't get cheaper than free. First in line for next month, unless the PO Box has surprises. 27.9 points.
#5: Some dude Joel - bought me a subscription to Countryside magazine, which is still the greatest fucking magazine ever to be having a country compound for. Mother Earth News is for city faggots who go to political meetings and hang out on Facebook all the time, talking about oil spills and political scandals that don't involve them. Countryside is for people who want to build chicken houses out of old factory pallets. 17.4 points.
In case you didn't know, the post office box is on the sidebar, but it's Raven Mack PO Box 270 Scottsville, VA 24590. You're also always welcome to give me money through the Enable Rojonekku button, but nobody ever does that, and you don't get shit for it except if you give me enough money to buy some beer, I'll probably let you special request some bullshit for me to write about. I ain't got shit else to do.

(7s) Longest Serving U.S. Senators #2 - Senator Daniel Ken Inouye (Democratic Lord of Hawaii)

Daniel Inouye has been the number one Senator from Hawaii since January 3, 1963. And before that, he was their Congressman since August 21, 1959, which was when they got statehood, meaning that Inouye has been a representative of that state since the very day the American flag had a 50th star stitched into the dark blue field. Being a natural paranoid, certain things about this cause red flags to fly up in the back of my brain washed heavily by conspiracy literature and 5% Islam rap lyrics. First off, you think of Hawaii and Japanese dudes (Inouye is second generation Japanese-American) and you automatically think of Pearl Harbor. Inouye, as the story goes, was a volunteer medic during the Pearl Harber attacks. He also served extensively during World War II (for America, in case you’re more paranoid than me). But there’s the whole “did they know Pearl Harbor was coming” angle to that matter, and if Inouye was prominently involved (not that prominent, but involved in his own back story heavily at least), and he became the first Representative and now has been their Senator since forever by World political standards, what’s going on there? I mean, anybody with half a joint’s worth of reading of Adam Weishaupt literature or William B. Cooper knows that our government is run more like The Godfather than the Constitution, using back door secret groups. Where does Inouye fit into all of this? This will probably be the most disconcerting part of me doing these two stupid lists is, my conspiracy knowledge has been lacking in recent years, mostly because I had been working on a project at one point to make a conspiracy of the day calendar, and all these weird fucking things kept showing up that disturbed the hell out of me, and I had to push it away. There’s obviously more going on than we publicly know, but when you start to see the depth of the interwoven tentacles, it’s best to just let it go and get on with your life and have a good one as much as you are allowed to and not use your brain to question so much as to pleasure yourself.

(7s) Should Be On DVD Easier #1 - Iron Chef

It makes no reason that the actual translated Iron Chef that was the most awesome thing on cable television for years is not on DVD. You can get the stupid fucking American Iron Chef thing, but none of the great wonderful actual Iron Chefs that made competitive cooking awesome. I was watching Anthony Bourdain the other week, and he actually met up with Chef Morimoto in Tokyo, and Morimoto had a ponytail and looked like a chill ass dude. I was like, “Whoa? That’s Chef Morimoto now?” And it just made me wish the show was still on. It also made me wonder what happened to the dude who wore the yellow. That guy was my favorite. Chef Chen maybe? Theme ingredients Iron Chef shows probably added more dishes to my daily diet than if I watched a billion hours of Emeril or Rachel Ray or whatever faggy white people cooking shows you people watch. I am so awesome because I only learn from outlandish nonsense.
Seriously though, I know this is the internet, and I see what keywords lead to this blog, so if one of you internet fruits has torrent downloaded all the Iron Chefs to burn to DVD, hit me up because I’d like to work a trade for that shit.

Sapporo

AFFORDABILITY: The Sapporo is not the cheapest tall can out there, but it is the niftiest shaped one. I will glady pay a little extra for some tight ergonomically correct feng shui boost to my life. My life needs all the boost it can get. And as I wrap my brain around a different drinking mentality, dropping $3 for one tasty silver tall can of Jap brew is a nice punctuation to the day. I don’t need to sink back into that “Well, I could get a 6-pack of Old Milwaukee for that price, and thus get drunker” train of thought. Really, I wish I could shake trains of thought like that, which seem to have most of the mainlines through my mindframe. 4 out of 5.
DESTROYABILITY: Being it is a child's name for Bob Sapp, I figured the Sapporo would be more beast-like. It was not. I know Jap beers have a strong reputation for being a double dropkick to sobriety, but I also know fringe-minded white American males tend to overemphasize how awesome Japanese things can be, to seem off-beat and quirky, but within the relative foreign safety zone of Japan, without a shred of threat to America whatsoever. Only time nuclear bombs got dropped was the U.S. on Japan, and sure they electronically bedazzle our asses on the regular, they don't come across as any real threat, so to sport yellow fever and accept wacky Japanese things as your hipster contrarian identity (or a facet of it, because you have to admit, hipsterism is so deeply pervasive now, that most hipster types have multiple elements to their purposely quirky personality) is not that dangerous a thing. 2 out of 5.
LABEL AESTHETIC: The Sapporo 22 ounce can is the most ergonomically correct and space age gangsta beer packaging device ever devised. The brushed silver look with gold and black symbols and info very subtlely added add to the stylishness. Seriously, if I hadn’t seen a whole row of these on a store shelf to show and prove to my brain that they were mass produced, I would think this was some sort of trophy given only to people who have gone above and beyond the standard accepted level of good-timed generosity as a token of our collective appreciation of the life they live. That type of person acts without attachment to the fruits of their actions, like a Vietnam Indian hobo used to tell me about in Monroe Park in Richmond, and I later learned that was Buddha talk or Hindu talk or both, but I still attach it in my mind to that one dude, because he was living it, not learning it. 17 out of 5.
CORPORATE MASTER: Sapporo is Japanese, I assume. Can says it is imported by Sapporo USA, based in New York City. In smaller print, can says “Brewed and canned by Sapporo Brewing Company, Guelph, Ontario, Canada”. On one hand, I really like how shit that gets popular in Japan basically makes a satellite office in either N.Y.C. or L.A. and calls itself Crazy Jap Words USA, with an LLC tacked on half the time. But on the other hand, this reads like some textbook multi-national corporation nonsense, and if paranoid post-midnight perusals of the internet have taught me anything, when led by Jeff Rense or William B. Cooper or Alex Jones or David Icke, this Sapporo shit is most likely some zionist alien illuminati propaganda extravaganza. And the can says “since 1876”, a perfect 100 years from America’s theatrical independence. I’m sure that means something too. 1 out of 5.
OVERALL AMBIANCE: The Sapporo was quite enjoyable, but I had been thinking about hardcore Japanese wrestling with Matsuhiro Matsunaga throwing dudes into cactus plants the other day, so maybe I was just tinted by Japophilia. The Sapporo was pretty nice though, and it has the nicest can in the bizness, and I bet if there was a great Korean restaurant with homemade fermented kimchi like I dream about in a dilapidated strip mall, for lack of enough Korean beer choices, they'd offer the Sapporo, and the old lady who cooked the food would come out herself to tell you what it was, because there wasn't a menu so much as a list of suggestions that constantly changed, like all good hole-in-the-wall foreign people bonafide food places. All of this means tightness of memory. 4 out of 5.
TOTAL RATING: 5 & 3/5 STARS!

Kirin Ichiban

AFFORDABILITY: The Kirin Ichiban tall can ain't as cheap as say PBR tallboy, but it does come from Japan. Pushing near $3 a tall can, this is obviously not an alleyway special, sitting on milk crates trading illuminati-laced freestyles with a couple dudes you been smoking angel dusted joints with. But it should be. Why must we limit ourselves economically, and create these stereotypes of finance we live inside of? 4 out of 5.
DESTROYABILITY: I only drank one, and it gave me a mighty head thick with looseness. I don’t drink like I once did, but still to have such a virginal drinking experience after over two decades of drinking degeneracy with deep dips and kidney-aching mornings that start at 10 am at the struggling ass earliest, it was a pleasurable feeling. There’s nothing like the first time, except when you can trick yourself into feeling like it’s the first time again. Damn, that should be an ad campaign for some bullshit. 5 out of 5.
LABEL AESTHETIC: There is no greater label aesthetic possible. This tall can reads, at one spot, “A mythical beast that is half deer and half dragon, the Kirin heralds good fortune. And great beer.” And then there’s some beer bullshit. The second spot of that text on the can is covered up by a dragon tail partially so that it reads “The good and great in Ichiban’s single-press process” and goes into the rest of the beer awesomeness bullshit. It is subliminal, sublime, and perfect. There is Jap talk characters as well, which I can’t read of course, being the Japanese Dexter Manley I am, but big black Orientalized characters on a white background is the ultimate tightness of illiteracy. This is the most greatest tall can design ever designed by humans being. 11 out of 5.
CORPORATE MASTER: Again, as the label reads, it be saying, “Brewed under the strict supervision of Kirin’s brewmaster by Anheuser-Busch, Inc., Los Angeles, CA.” It seems that most grass roots Jap shit that makes popular in the America is NorCal based, usually around San Francisco, and the more business-based bullshit making a run into the American wallet is set up around Los Angeles, whether that be beer or mixed martial artistry or bukkake porn or car drifting. This makes me distrustful, and the addition of the whole Anheuser-Busch dynamic like quadruple mega mass funkicides that. Those people can’t be trusted for shit. Even when I take my kid to Busch Gardens, I type up a letter in an envelope that says, “When opening this agreement and by reading it with your eyeballs, you waive any right to absolve yourselves of any medical bills and civil suits resulting from any injuries my children substain in the normal enjoyment of your amusement park. In no way do I intend to create imaginary financial gains from the proper enjoyment of your creations, but should bad things happen to my bloodlines due to your engineering negligence, you guarantee proper compensation, as decided by a jury of my peers, meaning regular people, where we get triple the veto power of potential jurors, because I know how you people work, with your lawyers in snakeskin suits carrying their writs and all. This includes all internal organ manipulations from physically wacked out rides, that sometimes cause far more trouble, long-term I’m speaking of, than just an upset stomach.” 2 out of 5.
OVERALL AMBIANCE: I am not the one to doubt the power of the half dragon half beast alcoholic beverage. The tall cans are right purty, and it gave my brain a fuel injection of ARGH. My compliments to the chef, whoever the Ichiban dude is overseeing the brewing shit in Los Angeles. Also all this talk of Ichiban makes me want to Rest in Peace MC Breed. 5 out of 5.
TOTAL RATING: 5 & 2/5 STARS!

September O.C.D. #4: Haiku/Renga

I have started writing the haiku again, on the regular, actually doing tankas with myself since I don’t really remember what I wrote three days later, so I guess it will work. If the weather is nice this weekend, since I will be home with the kids as the wife is studying elsewhere on some herbal doctoring tip, I may try to finish polyurethaning the original 12-pack haiku boxes project so that I can get some more grommets and brass chain and finish that shit completely. I find haiku to be a great form of writing because it’s quick blasts of observation, like a sample in music. But it’s also a form of writing chock full of pretentious assholes and fake ass organic food eating pseudo-Zen Buddhists mad adept at studying the fingertip instead of the reflection of the sun upside the moon’s head.
By the way, if you are a Yellowman Poetry Dork like myself, you probably know about Han Shan and how he’s like the MF Doom of the T’ang Dynasty. Well, I’d like to tell you that Red Pine’s translation of Han Shan’s shit smokes pretentious asshole fingertip studying Gary Snyder’s translation. Also, Red Pine’s The Clouds Should Know Me By Now compilation is pretty tight too.
I wish there was more
to say, but it's late. I'm drunk.
Work is in five hours.

August O.C.D. #3: Sumo Wrestling

Professional sumo in Japan is probably most closely akin to baseball in America in that nationalistic nerds take immense pride in the history of the sport and dedicate far more mental matter to over-analyzing it than is probably necessary. They only hold six tournaments a year, basically every other month, and I've always kind of been fascinated by it, as a kid when it still came on NBC sports on weekends from time to time. I guess it got retriggered a few years back when the Necro Butcher was on his first extended working trip of Japan and he sent me an email talking about how he was playing fantasy sumo online a lot. I looked for sumo shit then, but not much was going on.
For some reason though, I started looking it up a month or so ago, and found assorted online forums and places to keep up with the shit and learn about it. I remember a few years back when Akebono was the big shit in Japanese sumo that it was a big controversy, the Polynesian sumos as opposed to traditional Japanese sumos. Well, that argument's gone now, as the top couple stars (Asashoryu and Hakuho) are from Mongolia, and catch the same flack to an extent for not being Japs. But what caught my interest more than anything was this dude Kotooshu, who is a white dude, from Bulgaria, who I guess you could rank as probably the #3 dude in sumo right now.
First off, online sumo forums are like any online thing with message boards and internet fans - sad, depressing places with ridiculous nerd projects involving formulas and ratios to mathematically calculate who is more awesome than who else. I'm not sure what it is about the internet that attracts these types to physical things they could never hope to imitate in real life, but it does.
But as for Kotooshu, he's like the pre-eminent player in an influx of eastern Europeans starting to infiltrate the sumo sport's upper echelon. Kotooshu - white dude name Kaloyan Mahlyanov - was an old school style wrestler who was a national amateur wrestling star, and had hoped to compete for Bulgaria in the 2000 Olympics, but he got bigger than the highest weight limit for the sport, so he turned to sumo. Shady sumo Japs (the sport is mad hooked up with the yellow mafia) funneled money to Bulgaria to get the kid into a certain stable of sumos, where Kotooshu ("koto" is his stable name, and "osho" means Europe) flew through the lower five classes of sumo, getting to the top rank in 11 tournaments, or just under two years - the fastest ascent ever. Only eight tournaments later, he was promoted to ozeki class, which is the second highest rank of sumo possible. The highest - yokozuna - is rarely handed out and only given to dudes who are expected to contend for the championship every tournament. In the sense of sumo, contending means if you finish below say the top three or four guys, you bring shame to your yokozuna status. Anyways, Kotooshu was the first Euro to ever attain ozeki class, and he actually won a grand sumo tourney in the summer of 2008. Just last month, while I was actually looking up results every day of the Nagoya tournament, he came in second behind Hakuho, but he had a questionable loss during the tournament that put him one loss behind Hakuho.
Since that tournament ended, he flew back to Bulgaria to get some high ass national awards, and be considered a hero and source of pride for Bulgarians everywhere. Plus, with his hair done up in standard sumo style and his hairy ass chest, he reminds me of John Belushi's samurai cook character. But also, knowing sumo's yakuza connections, and also knowing how wide open and mafioso eastern Europe has been since the fall of the Soviet Union, the emergence of eastern Euro sumo wrestlers is really intriguing to me. I'm sure there's insane stories galore behind it all, when you mash two insane sub-cultures together like sumo and mafia, and then spike it with the environmental psychology of some eastern Europeans. August is a down month, but September will bring back the last Tokyo tournament of the year, and I'm sure I'll again be following closely Kotooshu's white dude dominance of a sport where giant dudes use sheer girth and strength to move each other around. It's such a simple assed sport, yet ridiculously overloaded with mysterious traditions that go back to things half the people who see it have little idea what it means, that it's hard not to love. It's like alpha-male religious extremism that allows and even encourages drunkenness and womanizing.
