Nagoya Basho 2017 Honour Tanka Day 11: NISHIKIGI (6-5)

(Aoiyama's championship hopes tumble)

juryo demotion
becomes extended remix
to oblivion

reaching makuuchi (top
level) defining moment

but maintaining good
win-loss record the only
key to survival

very simply, one will drop
or rise by wins and losses

thus, Nishikigi’s
rise to makuuchi was
challenged recently

three losing bashos in a
row saw him get demoted

at Natsu Basho
in May, back in juryo, he
had to start over

he ended up champion
at juryo level in May

thus, Nishikigi’s
back in makuuchi as
low maegashira

this means wins-losses very
important to maintain status

Nishikigi came
out strong, won five of first six,
then started struggling

day eleven, he
was even five-and-five, to
face Aoiyama

the big Bulgarian sat
one bout behind Hakuho

having easily
his best basho ever, stepped
in Aoiyama

as low-rank maegashira
Nishikigi needs more wins

makekoshi might
mean another demotion
back down to juryo

how many months spent struggling
to get back up? no one knows

some get demoted
and spend years attempting to
regain top status

some never get back, not just
old rikishi, young ones too

a very simple
merit-based formula
can be hard to crack

today, Aoiyama seems
poised to maintain his force

Nishikigi’s heels
being tested, resisting
Aoiyama’s girth

it looks to be another
Aoiyama victory

a loss meant trending
towards makekoshi for
poor Nishikigi

a loss meant demotion might
appear on the horizon

the last five days could
unravel into succession
of failure demons

five wins, ten losses would man
definite return below

that destiny teased
itself as reality
at dohyo’s far edge

inches between failure and
survivor’s perseverance

Nishikigi’s heels
pivoted, Aoiyama
chasing afterwards

for first time, Aoiyama
seems not in control of girth

Nishikigi pushed
big Aoiyama down, both
men falling closely

Nishikigi is declared
winner, surviving the day

each bout becoming
microscopic fault line
in his destiny

metaphysical maintenance
of position in sumo

Nagoya Basho 2017 Honour Tanka Day 10: TAKAYASU (8-2)

(Ura revving up but not enough)

Takayasu lost
first bout of his first basho
as an ozeki

after initial slip, he
settled into pure power

day 10 saw Ura,
young raw power punk himself,
facing off in clash

Takayasu gives no fucks
about Ura’s rising star

their bout is Ura
attacking like little dog
on sumo totem

Takayasu smacks him back
(one time literally so)

they lock up early
on, Ura fighting to gain
piece of advantage

big dog Takayasu stands
almost as if fighting child

he has armlock on
young Ura, but cannot end
the bout this quickly

Ura’s stubborn heart serves him
well against Takayasu

cartoonish Ura
revs back, tornado spinning
his legs to charge in

the young punk slide whistles in;
Takayasu stops the charge

Ura bounces off,
and the two stand in deep stare
for long half second

the next lock-up is the last,
as Takayasu is tired

Ura goes for one
behemoth Takayasu
leg, exposing neck

Takayasu is quick to
seize the opportunity

he grabs Ura’s head,
twists it back and forth until
flipping Ura down

the young punk has been humbled;
new ozeki proven true

Takayasu’s star’s
already risen; he’ll fend
off more newer stars

up-and-down of sumo rank
requires constant diligence

Nagoya Basho 2017 Honour Tanka Day 9: CHIYOMARU (5-4)

("awesome Chiyomaru survival")

the illogical
counter-intuitive grace
of sumo fat fuck

Chiyomaru does nothing
more than hit ring’s edge, then move

Shohozan even
slaps standstill Chiyomaru
at one stalled second

Chiyomaru does not flinch,
maintains moment’s position

eager Shohozan
unable to finish him,
Chiyomaru moves

Shohozan chases, feeling
his momentum in control

Chiyomaru moves,
nothing more, balancing at
dohyo’s farthest edge

moving to his left with deft
steps toeing the dohyo’s edge

Shohozan leans in,
chasing harder - the mistake
that brings about end

Chiyomaru - still balanced -
pushes Shohozan’s lean down

Shohozan tastes sand,
and despite dominating,
gets no envelopes

Chiyomaru standing as
expressionless as ever

what looks like little
effort a strange mastery
of balance and feel

illogically, rotund
man possessing immense grace

Nagoya Basho 2017 Honour Tanka Day 8: URA (5-3)

(Hakuho finishes off young Ura)

Hakuho’s beaten
many opponents before
their hands leave the sand

eldest yokozuna and
history’s grand champion

only a handful
of wins away from all-time
historic record

and yet here comes young Ura,
with only fourteen bashos

his third basho at
makuuchi, afraid of
no one his elder

Hakuho tosses salt with
more anger than anyone

psychological
or metaphysical - these
tactics have back-up

Hakuho stalks before bouts,
glaring with ominous threat

and yet young Ura
is not shook, and already
maegashira 4

Hakuho blasts with standard
force, often unstoppable

Ura does not stop
but pauses and redirects,
moving in spiral

Ura’s able to fend off
an immediate defeat

verse yokozuna,
this is victory enough;
but bout continues

pushed back to edge, Hakuho
has obvious advantage

Ura (however)
remains unshook, and attempts
to twist his elder

heel to rice straw bale, toes dug
in with stubborn resistance

only the young are
stubborn enough to not see
what is obvious

Hakuho has no mortal
match; this shall be his basho

and yet young Ura
does not give a fuck, twisting
after kinboshi

Hakuho contorts with him,
redirecting redirect

just as Hakuho
is turned more than easily
done, Ura is tossed

he lands in defeat, at least
in this particular bout

but Ura’s fighting
spirit is strong - tactics can’t
train a stubborn heart

Hakuho’s star is well-known,
as Ura’s starts to take shape

(the full match from Jason's Sumo Channel, should you care to watch it)

Nagoya Basho 2017 Honour Tanka Day 7: AOIYAMA (7-0)

("blue mountain" surges forward)

perfect first seven
bouts Nagoya basho for
big Aoiyama

disciple of Kotooshu,
blue mountain Bulgarian

never won yusho -
Kotooshu only won
one over ten years

Kotooshu also’s only
European-born elder

path of outsider
is always most difficult;
it’s worse in sumo

and yet Japanese themselves
have lost certain interest

prosperity meant
poor country boys with big dreams
occur less often

Aoiyama earned fighting
spirit award first basho

but that was six years
in rear view mirror; never
been close since that point

he’s been consistent middle
of the pack maegashira

at times, he’s flirted
with bigger success - double
digit wins three times

but a perfect first seven?
this is an aberration

another win means
kachikoshi with bouts to
spare for “blue mountain”

day seven provided as
opponent Ichinojo

this aberration
is energies synchronized
in perfect moments

synchronized energies means
unusual confidence

Aoiyama moved
only forwards this quick bout,
momentum focused

blue mountain’s blue mawashi
gave no chance to be controlled

Ichinojo could
do little but slow the force
moving him backwards

this force was more than one man -
energies control all life

Aoiyama - pale
by sumo’s traditions, “white”
in America

but the big Bulgarian’s
got his best basho ever

is this beginning
of an even bigger run?
only time will say

can Aoiyama challenge
elder Kotooshu’s legend?

legends are made one
basho at a time; bashos
one bout at a time

a perfect week still leaves wide
gaps in a man’s destiny
